There's Nothing to Do in Wilmington?
With so much going on right now, I'm not sure we could have picked a better month to launch this site. Wilmington is home to phenomenal talent all across the spectrum; from the staff of our arts and entertainment organizations, to the individual artists and musicians showcased by them, undeniable skill surrounds us. The diversity of our programming is astounding - offering traditional to experimental options, right here, in your backyard. Yet, we still hear people grumble about how “There’s nothing to do in Wilmington." That's simply not true, and
inWilmingtonDE.com is here to help open your eyes to the world of possibilities!
To illustrate, we've designed a card-collecting contest that will run over the course of the next year highlighting the myriad of entertainment at your disposal. From rock to opera, bars to ballet, each and every organization selected will help paint the true, beautifully diverse picture of Wilmington. We’ll reward you for your efforts with things like free tickets and gift certificates to local restaurants - but we really shouldn’t have to considering the fun you’ll have along the way! Visit our QR Contest Page for more information and read on to hear about some of our picks from Series 1 (May – July)…
Into art? Stop by the Delaware Art Museum where you’ll find a beautiful mix of both traditional and contemporary works. I’ve marked May 21st on my personal calendar as the day to grab their IN card, as the 4-person exhibit Perception/Deception: Illusion in Contemporary Art opens. Prefer live music? Well, then keep an eye on World Cafe Live at the Queen, The Grand and Nomad Bar, the relaxing jazz club on the 900 block of Orange that’s creating quite the buzz around town (despite the fact their isn’t even a sign to mark the building!). They may not serve food, but their fully-stocked bar, with one of the best beer selections in town, is sure to please. It’s okay if you get hungry, though – that’s gives you the perfect excuse to walk on over to Chelsea Tavern to collect their IN card and enjoy some of the best food in town!
Thanks to the warm weather, Series 1 includes plenty of outdoor options like the Wilmington Flower Market, a local tradition which raises money for 75 children’s charities; The Delaware Center for Horticulture, Trolley Square’s hidden gem that proves you can have a ton of fun playing in the garden; the Blue Rocks, Wilmington’s way to enjoy America’s favorite pastime; and the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation, whose Wilmington Pirate Day provides the perfect chance to take a look at Delaware’s Tall Ship first-hand and enjoy live-music with tons of pirate fun for the whole family! You have until the end of July to collect all 9 cards featured in this Series. If you missed your chance to get your Flower Market IN card, don’t worry, we’ll announce special blitzes over the next few months – just make sure you’re a registered user, so you don’t miss a beat!
Of course, there are TONS of things not in this Series of the contest that you don’t want to miss. This weekend provides the perfect examples: Thursday, XPN brings the sold-out 3-day non-COMM to the Queen, and Friday, May 20th, kicks of the Wilmington Grand Prix, a 3-day USA Cycling National Racing Calendar event. But, with nationally-recognized events like these to choose from, don't forget about your other choices like the Bellefonte Arts Festival and Tea in Trinity Vicinity - a rare chance to enjoy a carriage ride in the streets of Wilmington! Not to mention, you could catch City Theater Company’s take on the Tony-winning musical NINE before it closes Saturday, join the Delaware Symphony Orchestra for their Classical Series featuring Martina Filjak or see Wilmington Drama League’s production of I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change.
I hope this gives you enough reasons (for now, anyway) to speak up and correct someone the next time you hear “There’s nothing to do in Wilmington.” In a relatively small city such as ours, there should be no excuse for not knowing about each and every one of the amazing things we offer. Let everyone know that no matter what they’re into you’ve found the place they can go to find out what’s happening, inWilmingtonDE.com. Start to explore beyond your own norm, try something new, and if you like it, tell your friends! We can't keep our little secrets quiet anymore, or they won't be around for us to enjoy.
